25 Feb 2020 - Environment & Waste

Mayor Steve Christou will roll up his sleeves and join Clean Up Australia Chair Pip Kiernan for a Clean Up Australia Day event at Duck River on Tuesday, 25 February 2020.

As part of the clean-up of Duck River, Mayor Christou, Deputy Mayor Eddy Sarkis and Councillor Paul Garrard will join Clean Up Australia volunteers and remove rubbish alongside the Webb Avenue playing fields.

“Given the huge impact that rubbish has on our environment, I’m very proud that we have an opportunity to work with Clean Up Australia and ensure the natural beauty of this water stream, which is of huge significance to the local area,” said Mayor Christou.

“By removing rubbish, we are helping to protect Duck River.”

Over 30 years, more than 17.7 million Clean Up volunteers have donated more than 35 million hours across Australia. Together they have removed the equivalent of 365,000 ute-loads of rubbish.

Pip Kiernan, Chairman of Clean Up Australia, said she was happy to see more Australians taking note of important conversations about the environmental impacts of waste.

“While there is still considerable work to be done, it is encouraging to see that this year there were notable declines in the volume of plastics, food packaging, and chip and confectionary packets,” Ms Kiernan said.

“It reflects the work that Clean Up Australia is doing year-round to reduce the amount of waste and packaging in the environment - and not just clean it up when waste is discarded.

“We need to band together as Australians to tackle the issue of waste and safeguard the environment for future generations, we want Australians to Step Up and think about the positive changes they can make for the environment every day.”

About Duck River: Following Captain Arthur Phillip’s arrival, a party explored the Parramatta River and a tributary upstream. At the start of the tributary, they landed on the shore near Clyde. Ducks appeared to be rising out of a swamp and the waterway was named Duck River. These were not ducks, however, but Eastern Swamp Hens.
