Children and young people are invited to research an available sport or health program, and pitch to Council why it should be run at their school.

Children and young people are invited to research an available sport or health program, and pitch to Council why it should be run at their school.

The online project is in addition to the school-based project that is currently running and is initiated by teachers.

"Since the COVID-19 outbreak, Council has been working with our community partners on ways you can still be active and healthy from home," said Mayor Steve Christou.

“I'm sure young people in our community have had a lot of screen time during the quarantine period, and we need to do more to get our kids active and encourage healthy lifestyles. This is our next generation and we owe our kids the best possible start in life.

“Cumberland’s ‘Healthy Kids Pitch’ is open to all primary and secondary schools across Cumberland so we are calling for school students to get their thinking caps on and pitch their sports or health program via a video, photo, PowerPoint, written report or by drawing or a story.”

"Get creative and be active."

The winning student’s pitch will be implemented at their school and funded by the Healthy Kids Initiative.

The program will also be added to Council’s Healthy Kids Initiative programs offered at schools in the LGA. Additionally, a sports equipment kit valued at $300 will be awarded to support the implementation of more physical activities at school.

The runner-up prize winner will also receive a $200 multi-sport equipment kit for their school. Both winner and runner-up kits will have their equipment selected by the winning students.

The children/young person entering must attend a school in the Cumberland LGA.

Entries can be submitted via email to cschildrenfamilies@cumberland.nsw.gov.au or via Council’s mailing address (Cumberland City Council, PO Box 42, Merrylands NSW 2160). Entries close Friday June 12 at 5pm.

In 2018, Councillor Christou moved a Council motion to introduce the Healthy Kids program. The initiative now reaches at least half of all schools in the Cumberland LGA.

In light of the COVID-19 pandemic all Healthy Kids Initiative programs including the free school holiday clinics were suspended. Council staff have been working on putting together activity information and videos for parents to access via Council’s website to enable children and young people to be active from home.
