Media Release - 14 April 2019

Following an extremely talented field of entries from all corners of the community, Cumberland Council and the Peacock Gallery are delighted to announce the winners of the 2019 Cumberland Art and Photography Awards (CAPAs).

The winning entries will be on public exhibition from Saturday 13 April – Sunday 28 April 2019. Council committed a total of $8,700 in prize money towards eight awards across visual arts and photography for the CAPAs. A coveted three month artist’s residency at the Peacock Gallery Auburn Arts Studio is also on offer.

Cumberland Mayor Greg Cummings said the CAPAs showcase home grown talent with the professional advantages of a major art prize.

“Cumberland Council wants to champion and develop the world-class creativity found here at home. By offering professional space in the Peacock Gallery, we are encouraging emerging artists and photographers to take the next step in their creative careers,” Clr Cummings said.

“The CAPAs go from strength to strength each year; we’re always astonished at the quality of the work and the difficulty of singling out winners.”

The awards acknowledge artworks which best capture outstanding artistic practice, our local community, sustainability or the creative reuse of materials; the celebration of our local parks and open spaces is also highly regarded.

The CAPA Awards Presentation Day and Exhibition Launch Ceremony will be held this Saturday 13 April 2019 from 1.30-3.30pm at the Peacock Gallery.
