The winners of Cumberland City Council’s Healthy Kids Pitch competition have been announced during a ceremony at Council Chambers yesterday.

The winners were presented with a Healthy Kids Pitch prize of $5,000 to help fund the roll out of an idea to their school. The winning schools and projects are:

  • St Peter Chanel - Getting Back to our ROOTS - which involves setting up a community garden.
  • Beresford Road Public School - Beresford Buddies Program - which sees children lead physical activity program training and receive sporting equipment.
  • Westmead Christian Grammar School - Fitness with Family project - which establishes a weekly online fitness video of exercise that can be done at home.
  • Guildford West Public School - A lot of Cultural Spice - which will extend the existing community garden.

“We know that around 80 percent of Australian school kids don't get enough exercise and only 2% eat enough fruit and vegetables, and by working closely with our schools and young people, the aim is to turn those statistics around,” said Mayor Steve Christou.

“The pitch requires each school to put forward their idea on a program or project that will result in their school community promoting and leading a healthier lifestyle.

“These schools are improving the health of children and young people and embedding long-term behavioural change within the school community, and I want to acknowledge the time and effort you’ve put in to create and submit such impressive applications and deliver the message about making healthy choices.

“I am extremely proud of the work we are doing together for the better of our youth and their future.”

To date, the Healthy Kids initiative has reached 4510 children in Cumberland, through workshops and clinics supporting children’s health and wellbeing.

A special thank you to Dooleys and Lidcombe Shopping Centre who have sponsored these prizes.
