Cumberland City Council is promoting awareness of asbestos around the home by providing free information sessions, inspections and collections during Asbestos Awareness Month this November.

“Cumberland City forms part of Western Sydney’s ‘fibro belt’, a region that has a very high concentration of asbestos in homes and other products,” said Mayor Steve Christou.

“There are many products that residents may not be aware of that were made of bonded asbestos cement including fibro sheeting used in walls, ceilings and eves, water drainage and flue pipes, guttering and floor coverings.

“Many homes in Cumberland City that were built before 1990 will most likely contain asbestos. As a Council, it’s important to educate residents on potential dangers and how to identify, remove and dispose of it safely and legally.”

Asbestos exposure has been linked to DIY renovations, and with an increase in DIY home renovations, homeowners need to be aware of the risks and how to reduce incidences of unsafe asbestos management practices.

“If you live in a property built before 1990, Council’s household inspections and information sessions will be very beneficial to you, and I encourage you to contact us for more information or to register for an inspection and information session.”

Household inspections will be held on Saturday, 14 November and an online information session will be held on Saturday, 21 November from 10am to 12pm.
