Cumberland City Council has welcomed the State Government’s finalisation of the planning proposal for the revitalisation of the Wentworthville town centre.

“Delivering on my commitment since becoming Mayor, Council has endorsed the finalisation of planning controls and a public domain plan for Wentworthville town centre, which aims to facilitate the urban renewal and economic revitalisation of the area,” said Mayor Steve Christou.

“The planning proposal will support an additional 1,800 dwellings in the town centre, a shopping centre, provision of a new 4,000 square metre full-line supermarket and public domain plazas to serve the local population.”

The revitalisation of the centre is also consistent with the directions outlined in Cumberland 2030: Our Local Strategic Planning Statement, which received a letter of support from the State Government’s Greater Sydney Commission earlier this year.

“We have a very constructive working relationship with the State Government, and I’m pleased that we’re working together to get results for the people of Cumberland”.

The planning controls for the Wentworthville town centre were publicly exhibited between May and July 2019, with Council receiving 35 submissions.

The finalisation of the planning proposal coincides with the lodgement of a development application for the revitalisation of the Wentworthville Mall site, which will undergo community consultation and a merit based assessment by Council.

“The new shopping centre will generate over 200 jobs during construction and 260 ongoing jobs within the commercial and retail component of the development,” said Mayor Steve Christou.

Council has also received a $95,000 grant from the State Government to be allocated to public domain demonstration project in Wentworthville. This grant will enable Council to deliver a quick response project to pilot improvements for the town centre consistent with the Wentworthville Public Domain Plan.
