Cumberland Council is encouraging residents to prepare and stay safe in a time of crisis by downloading and developing an emergency plan using the Get Prepared app.

“We want our residents to be resilient to disasters,” said Mayor Greg Cummings.

“How people react to stress during and after an emergency can have a huge impact on how they cope and subsequently recover. It is important to have a written emergency plan in case they forget the plan or are not thinking clearly in an emergency.

“The Get Prepared app helps residents connect with key support people, accomplish simple tasks to make loved ones safer and protect the things that matter most to them.

“The app is a free, easy to use, one-stop tool to help you prepare for any type of emergency.”
Residents can:

  • establish a quick and easy network of support with three key contacts
  • review the risks relevant to where they live
  • create checklists of actions to make an emergency plan; and
  • save the emergency plan as a PDF to be printed and shared with others.

“We are proud to be a Council that is participating in the Resilient Sydney program and working with the Councils of Sydney to create a metropolis that is connected, inclusive and resilient.”

A national initiative that has taken place each year since 1996, Emergency Preparedness Week will be held from 23-29 September.

The Get Prepared app, was co-created by Australian Red Cross and general insurer IAG, to keep your emergency plan close to hand.

Disasters can include bushfires, floods and events causing major disruption such as blackouts and heatwaves.
