At its ordinary meeting on 26 March 2025, Cumberland City Council debated a motion regarding the removal of the “Racism Not Welcome” signs currently displayed across the Local Government Area (LGA). Following a thorough discussion, Council has resolved to remove all 50 signs.

Council acknowledges that while these signs were a symbol of its commitment to inclusivity, their removal does not end Council’s commitment to combatting racism and fostering a truly welcoming environment.

Cumberland City Council Mayor Ola Hamed, in her role as the Council's spokesperson, respects the Chamber's decision but cast her vote against the removal of the signs.

“Council engaged in a robust discussion regarding the motion of the ‘Racism Not Welcome’ signs in Cumberland. Unfortunately, racism still exists in our community and Council is committed to ensuring that we continue the incredible work in combatting racism and fostering a truly welcoming environment despite the removal of the signs,”

“I am proud to lead one of the most culturally diverse and vibrant Councils in NSW and we remain dedicated to fostering a place where everyone feels welcome and valued, regardless of their background or identity. Council celebrates many cultural and religious events including Ramadan, Lunar New Year, Nowruz, Diwali, Easter and Christmas celebrations and remains committed to bringing the community together to honour the rich tapestry of cultures our community is known for,”

“We will continue to engage with the community, and work alongside local groups and community leaders, to implement effective initiatives that create a truly inclusive environment for all," said Mayor Hamed.

Cumberland City Council reaffirms that at the heart of its community events is a commitment to policies grounded in values of inclusivity and respecting the human rights of all residents, aimed at bringing people together in meaningful ways. These values and policies are fundamental to fostering unity and ensuring a welcoming environment for all.
