The first major concrete slab has been poured at the new $25 million Granville Centre, which includes a multipurpose community centre, library and arts facility within walking distance to Granville Train Station.
Mayor of Cumberland, Steve Christou joined Council staff and the contractor on Wednesday. More than 40 trucks poured around 300 cubic metres of concrete throughout the day.
Mayor Christou said the first concrete pour was a significant step forward for one of the area’s biggest infrastructure projects.
“We are committed to delivering a community space where residents can come together to study, learn, connect, access support and create,” he said.
“With an ambitious program of capital works planned or in progress for Cumberland, the Granville Centre is one of our biggest projects.
“Now the first major concrete slab has been poured, construction of the Centre is well and truly underway.
“The approved design will build upon the existing elements of Granville Pool, park lands and will also provide new outdoor recreation facilities.
“Residents can expect to see the structure take shape over the next year, as will commuters if they’re passing through Granville on the Western line.”
The concrete poured today will be the ground floor of the main building. This is the first of three concrete pours planned for the Centre.
Construction of the Centre is expected to be complete in the second half of 2020. The project is jointly funded by Cumberland Council and the NSW Government's Stronger Communities Fund.
Council was also awarded funds through the Granville Smart Cities Precinct Pilot Project to ensure the Centre uses smart technologies including energy efficient LED and solar lighting, traffic and parking sensors, surveillance systems and offer public Wi-Fi.
The NSW Office of Responsible Gambling has also contributed funds to the fit out of the art gallery and arts spaces under the ClubGrants Category 3 Fund.
