Cumberland Council will host two Citizenship Ceremonies today, welcoming 241 new citizens to the Cumberland Local Government Area.
The ceremonies coincide with Citizenship Day, which is an opportunity for all Australian citizens, whether by birth or by choice, to reflect on the meaning and importance of their citizenship.
“241 people will take the pledge today in Merrylands, making a public commitment to Australia and accepting the responsibilities and privileges of being Australian,” said Mayor Greg Cummings.
“One of the special things about the new Cumberland area is our cultural diversity.
“With residents from over 150 different countries, we see diversity as our strength and citizenship ceremonies like these, give us a chance to celebrate it.”
The top countries of origin for today’s new citizens are India, South Korea and Nepal.
Citizenship confers the same rights and responsibilities on all individuals and ensures individuals are treated equally under the law.
Cumberland Council hosts Australian Citizenship Ceremonies frequently, depending on requests from the Department of Immigration and Border Protection.
