Cumberland City Council is proud to celebrate International Women’s Day (IWD) 2025 with a series of empowering events and initiatives to honour women from all walks of life within the community.

This year, Council launched a special social media and video campaign that showcased the incredible roles, achievements, and efforts of women across Cumberland. The campaign highlighted the global themes of ‘Accelerate Action’ and ‘March Forward,’ demonstrating that every woman has the power to make a significant impact and accelerate actions towards gender equality, in their own unique way.

The video campaign will be showcased at Cumberland’s International Women’s Day brunch, taking place on Monday 10 March 2025, at The Holroyd Centre. The brunch serves as a platform to celebrate women’s achievements across various industries, and amplify the message of empowerment, while also encouraging all members of the community to take action toward gender equality.

Cumberland Mayor Ola Hamed believes it is important to recognise and empower all women from diverse backgrounds and roles within the community to foster a culture of inclusivity.

“As we celebrate International Women’s Day, Cumberland City Council is proud to honour the women who lead in our community, on our Council, and within our organisation. These women, whether they’ve overcome adversity or shattered barriers to achieve success, inspire us all”, said Mayor Hamed.

“But our work is not done. We are building a Cumberland where all women and girls experience genuine equality and are empowered to thrive. Through our ongoing initiatives, we are committed to not only acknowledging the incredible contributions of women, but also to breaking down the barriers that continue to limit their opportunities and potential”.

As part of this year’s celebrations, Cumberland City Council also hosted the "Empower Yourself" Expo on Thursday 6 March 2025, at Redgum Function Centre in Wentworthville. The event provided women with essential resources and information to support their personal empowerment. It focused on helping women advocate for themselves and their children, especially in the aftermath of domestic and family violence. By offering access to legal information, employment opportunities, study and training resources, tax-related assistance, and health and wellbeing support, the Expo helped women build the skills and confidence they needed to achieve self-sufficiency and independence.
