Cumberland Council will mark Lunar New Year with auspicious red banners flying across town centres and free, family-friendly entertainment at the Auburn Central Forecourt on Saturday 16 February 2019, from 5-9pm.
Mayor Greg Cummings invites residents to come down and welcome in the Lunar New Year, the Year of the Pig, in style.
“Our Lunar New Year celebration is a lively, family friendly festival jam-packed with free entertainment, traditional dance and music, lion dance performance, street food markets and crafts and activities for everyone to enjoy,” Mayor Cummings said.
“Lunar New Year is a truly global festival. It is celebrated right across the world. Sydney now boasts the largest Lunar New Year celebrations outside of mainland China and Cumberland’s celebrations are part of this mix. Of course Lunar New Year is also celebrated in Korea (known as Seollal) and Vietnam (known as Tet).
“Our event will be kicking off in the late afternoon from 5pm. The main stage will showcase the very best in traditional dance and music entertainment including spectacular lion dance with acrobatics, Sydney KPOP superstars and Sichuan opera face changing show.
“There will also be shadow puppet theatre telling Chinese horoscope stories, astrologers doing readings, Chinese vegetable carvings, as well as craft activities for kids. There will be a food market selling affordable delicious food to keep you going through the night.
“Traditionally the Lunar New Year is a time for being with family and feasting with loved ones; for sweeping away the old and making way for the new. To celebrate, we’ve also got banners, now proudly flying across our town centres, wishing all our residents “Happy New Year”.
“I encourage all of our residents to get down to Auburn and visit this fantastic event. Public transport via train or bus will be the easiest way to access the event and placing you right in the heart of all the activities in Auburn.”
