Cumberland Council’s annual Workplace Tragedy Memorial Ceremony on Saturday 4 May, at 9.30am for 10.00am at the Brickworks site in Holroyd Gardens, will acknowledge workers who have died as a result of workplace injury or disease.

Those who have lost a loved one to a workplace injury or illness are being asked to honour their memory and raise awareness about the importance of work safety, by requesting a name plaque to be mounted on The Wall of Memory at Cumberland’s Workplace Tragedy Memorial.

The service, arranged by Council in partnership with the Workplace Tragedy Family Support Group, enables family and colleagues to meet and reflect on the individuals lost. This local event aligns with International Workers’ Memorial Day held in late April.

The international commemorative event started in Canada in 1984 and has since expanded to over 30 countries including Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Argentina, Brazil and the United States of America.

“Acknowledging those lost is yet another reminder of the need to be ever vigilant in finding ways to improve workplace safety for Council employees and visitors”, said Mayor Greg Cummings.

“Council is committed to providing a safe working environment for employees so that our workforce can return home safely at the end of each working day.

Cumberland Council continues to proactively promote safety requirements and preventative methods to its workforce.

“Each memorial plaque represents a person who has prematurely lost their life. The stories behind each plaque are as unique and special as the person they symbolise. Their loss is simply devastating for all involved, and this is a way to honour them.”
