Cumberland Council will open its Chinese Lunar New Year festivities at around 5pm, Saturday, 1 February 2020, with a traditional lion dance weaving through Auburn Central.

Mayor Steve Christou invites residents to come and join an evening full of fun and cultural festivities as we celebrate this very special year.

“Chinese New Year is celebrated all over the world and Australia has one of the biggest celebrations outside of Asia,” Mayor Christou said.

“The Chinese new year is a festival that not only celebrates the beginning of a new year, it symbolises coming together, new beginnings and a fresh start.

“I invite not only our Chinese residents but all residents in Cumberland to get involved in this year’s celebration of the Year of the Rat, the first of all zodiac animals. The Rat symbolises strong vitality, fortune and strong character.

“Whether it’s the culture and colour or lights and lion dances, it is a time of reflecting and bonding with loved ones and good fortune.

“Our event will start in the late afternoon at around 5pm. Following the lion dance, the main stage will include traditional Chinese folk dancing, a Kung Fu Panda show, drumming, Japanese martial arts and a KPOP performance.

“There will also be face painting in the animals of the Chinese zodiac, puppet shows and a roving Chinese God of Fortune. There will be plenty of affordable food and free activities for the whole family.

“Public transport via train or bus will be the easiest way to access the event and placing you right in the heart of all the activities in Auburn.”
