Love water, don’t waste it

As Sydney continues to experience a heat wave Council is urging people to be water wise as a way to conserve Sydney’s water supply.

Mayor Greg Cummings said that while Greater Sydney dam levels are just over 60 percent at the moment, water is a precious resource and it is important for the community to take steps to ensure it’s not wasted.

“Over the last few years we have experienced dry weather and Sydney Water have implemented Water Wise Rules for residents and businesses in Greater Sydney to abide by,” Mayor Cummings said.

“Some Water Wise Rules may seem obvious such as having four minute showers and using a half flush in the bathrooms. However other water savings tips might be new information to residents such as only watering lawns and gardens with a trigger nozzle before 10am and after 4pm. Another garden tip is to spread around 7 – 10cm of mulch around plants which will help save water lost through evaporation.

“The NSW Government has a plan to ensure we have sufficient water but it’s up to all of us as a community to take actions now to ensure our needs and the needs of the environment are met into the future.

“During this heat wave it’s also an important time to check on those around you particularly older family and friends. While we can save water in the household and garden, staying hydrated is one of the best ways to stay safe in the heat.”

Some tips to remain Water Wise:

  • Water your garden before 10am and after 4pm
  • Keep your showers to four minutes
  • Fully load your dishwasher or washing machine before turning it on
  • Wash your car on the lawn
  • Add mulch to your garden to reduce water loss
  • Fix leaking taps and toilets
  • Wash vegetables and rinse dishes in a plugged sink not under a running tap
