Cumberland City Council has welcomed $1 million courtesy of the Greater Cities Sport Facility Fund, which will see the installation of a new irrigation system and upgrades to existing floodlighting at Granville Park.

Mayor Steve Christou said the project works would target Granville Park Claremont fields 3, 4 and 5.

“Council commenced investigations into the irrigation and floodlight upgrade last year where the estimated cost of the proposed upgrades exceeded $2 million,” said Mayor Steve Christou.

“The funding announcement is a great outcome from the Office of Sport which is supporting Council in maintaining our public assets. By investing in new and existing sports infrastructure, we are helping more people experience the benefits of participating in sport and active recreation”.

Council aims to increase the utilisation and standard of the Granville Park Claremont Fields to increase participation in sport and meet the needs of the local community.

In June 2021, Council also approved funding in the 2021-22 capital works budget to support the upgrade.

The design for the upgrade works including irrigation and floodlighting is complete, with tenders now open.

Once works near completion, Council will review the playing surface to determine which field renovation works can be done without affecting the surface level.

The NSW Government has committed $50 million to the Greater Cities Sport Facility Fund over two-years, helping create spaces and facilities that enable communities to enjoy and take part in sport.
