One of Cumberland Council’s key infrastructure projects is nearing completion with 2,300 square metres of new footpath laid in the town centre of Merrylands.

“At Council we are getting back to basics and this means ensuring our footpaths and roads are maintained to a high standard,” Mayor Steve Christou said.

“Sections of the main walkway through Merrylands town centre were looking tired and pedestrian and businesses are getting safer and newer footpaths, situated in the heart of Merrylands’ town centre.

“This is something that the community has been looking forward to for some time and I want to thank businesses and shoppers in the area for their patience during works.”

In addition to new footpaths, Council will be fixing stormwater and drainage around the area.

“This work will consolidate drainage infrastructure to ensure floodwater control and ensure businesses have necessary stormwater infrastructure, particularly when it rains hard,” Mayor Christou said.

“Works have started in the Merrylands precinct in the new developments in Neil Street and current works are due to finish in early 2020.”

Council will continue working with developers and on its own land in the coming years to improve the stormwater and drainage networks servicing the Merrylands town centre.

In the last financial year, Council has completed or is in the process of rolling out major infrastructure projects as part of an ambitious program of $70 million in capital works.
