Cumberland Council is inviting the community to join its Clean Up Australia Day event at Duck River in Auburn on Sunday 3 March 2019.

Mayor Greg Cummings said Council is working towards a cleaner, greener Cumberland and is leading the way for the community by hosting two staff and community clean up events.

“We’re not just talking the talk, we’re putting our words into action. Our office based staff will be out in the streets and parks surrounding Council Service Centres cleaning up rubbish,” said Mayor Cummings.

“Our Council street cleaning staff already do a fantastic job picking up litter, clearing paths and cleaning parks, but there is only so much ground they can cover each day. It is all of our responsibility to look after our environment and make Cumberland an inviting place to live, work and visit.

Since its inception in 1987, more than 16 million Australians have donated more than 33 million hours to Clean Up Australia Day and have removed more than 350,000 ute loads of rubbish from our communities Australia wide.

“We want our Cumberland community to be part of these growing numbers and to get out and about to help clean up.

“One of the most common pollutants we find is plastic, whether it be bottles, plastic bags or food packaging. We want to use this day as a chance to clean up but also educate our community about the negative impact that plastic and other rubbish have on our waterways and natural environment.

“Clean Up Australia Day is just one day, but it’s something that should be at the forefront of our minds every day. Council offers a range of programs and services that help to keep Cumberland clean and green.

“Council offers four free pickups a year per household to clear rubbish and household waste which can be booked online, a community mobile recycling service where residents can book a free e-waste collection, as well as a range of sustainability and energy reducing events.

“Getting involved in a clean up event is a really practical way to make an impact in your community. Each piece of rubbish collected has a positive effect on our environment so if you can’t join our clean up event, why not start your own? It’s a great way to get together with neighbours, family and friends and get outside.

“I encourage everyone to get involved where they can.
