Cumberland Council has prepared a draft Plan of Management for Prospect Hill, to help guide the future management and development of the site, and invites the community to comment.
Characterised by extensive grasslands on the eastern slopes, Prospect Hill in Pemulwuy is a natural topographic feature rising to 112 metres above sea level, forming one of the highest points between the NSW coastline and the Blue Mountains, allowing a unique 360‐degree view of Sydney from the top of the hill.
Registered as a Local and State Heritage site, the parkland is where the first Aboriginal / European reconciliation was held in Sydney. The plan has been prepared in context with the natural, indigenous and cultural significance of Prospect Hill.
Mayor Greg Cummings said while the plan meets the legal requirements of the Local Government Act to ensure the efficient use and management of community land, it also prioritises future assets, embellishment works and maintenance requirements.
“This Plan of Management will help shape the future of Prospect Hill. Taking into consideration the cultural significance of the site, the draft plan aims to reflect the values and desired outcomes of engagement with the community,” Mayor Cummings said.
“Our vision is to provide visitor and community facilities while also preserving Prospect Hill as a site of cultural significance and interpretation for future generations. It is also important that any work retains the prominence of Prospect Hill as a significant cultural, geological and topographical site.
“Feedback from the community will play a vital role in the finalisation of the draft Plan of Management and in due time, the implementation of the plans objectives.
“A public hearing is being held to seek feedback on the proposed draft Plan of Management and the community is invited to attend.”
The public hearing will be held on Thursday 13 December from 6-7.30pm in Committee Room 1 at 16 Memorial Avenue, Merrylands.
Prospect Hill is a significant venue to the Aboriginal community for annual National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee (NAIDOC) Week and Reconciliation Day events, which attract a large number of people, including public figures and school children from all over Sydney.
The community can also have their say at haveyoursay.cumberland.nsw.gov.au until 22 January 2019.
