Winners in Cumberland Council’s third Annual Garden Competition were announced on Tuesday evening at an invite only awards ceremony.

At the Norrie Marley Kiosk in Merryland’s Central Gardens, Mayor Greg Cummings congratulated the youngest budding green thumbs through to the most experienced garden gurus.

Category winners were as follows:

  • Open Garden – Alfred Aquilina, Wentworthville
  • Industrial/Commercial Garden – Merrylands RSL, Merrylands
  • Small Garden – Emine Agar, Auburn
  • Seniors Garden – Maria Pusic, Merrylands
  • Schools and Community Garden – Hilltop Road Public School, Merrylands

Maria Pusic of Merrylands was named the Grand Champion of the 2018 Annual Garden Awards, for her entry in the ‘Seniors Garden’ category.

“The Annual Garden Competition brings together people from all walks of life who share a common interest in gardening and a sense of pride in their community,” Mayor Cummings said.

“There is an enormous sense of welcoming and hospitality that overcomes a person when they drive down a street with well presented, beautiful gardens.

“That’s exactly what we want people to experience, whether they are visiting our corner of Western Sydney or living within it.

“All of this year’s entrants take pride in their garden and, in turn, their local area. Pride is an important characteristic which creates a sense of belonging, togetherness and community spirit.

“I would like to thank and congratulate all nominees for being great examples of what our Cumberland community represents.”

Category winners received a trophy and a $100 gift voucher, with the Grand Champion – chosen from the category winners – taking home a $500 gift voucher.
