Cumberland City Council is inviting residents to take part in the upcoming Native Plant Giveaway, with 1000 plants on offer to be collected from the Auburn Botanic Gardens!
These easy-care plants are perfect for pots, hedges, groundcover or screening. They thrive in local soils and attract all forms of natural fauna including native bees, butterflies and birds.
From golden Yellow Buttons and vibrant Native Daisies to climbing Native Sarsaparilla and hardy Grevilleas, residents will be able to take home beautiful native plants that bring colour, shade and biodiversity to their gardens.
Planting native trees and shrubs across Cumberland delivers lasting benefits, including increased canopy cover, reduced urban heat and more habitat for local wildlife.
Cumberland Mayor Ola Hamed encouraged residents to get involved and spoke about the importance of greenery in building resilient and liveable communities.
“Council’s giveaway program is a fan favourite in our community. So much so that Cumberland hosts two events every year, just in case some missed out the first time,” Mayor Hamed said.
“Green spaces and native vegetation are essential for the health and wellbeing of our residents and our environment. By planting more native trees and shrubs we can make our suburbs cooler, greener and more sustainable for future generations. This program not only supports biodiversity but also gives our residents the chance to be part of the solution in creating a healthier Cumberland.”
The Native Plant Giveaway is only one part of Council’s ongoing commitment to protecting local biodiversity and empowering residents to play an active role in caring for the environment. Through programs such as the Creating Change: One Seed at a Time, native bird education, backyard stingless bee hives, community and verge gardens, and the Kitchen 2 Gardens initiative, Cumberland City Council continues to advocate and support the creation of greener spaces, stronger habitats, and more sustainable practices for all.
