Cumberland Council is inviting residents to learn more about the wide range of services available to them during Local Government Week, 30 July – 5 August 2018.

Mayor Greg Cummings invited members of the community to get involved in Local Government Week at the following events:

  • Resource Recovery Team: Auburn Central, Tuesday 31 July 9am -4pm
  • The Great Big Brunch, Guildford Community Centre, Thursday 2 August 11am – 1pm
  • Resource Recovery Team Stockland Merrylands, Friday 3 August 9am – 4pm
  • Meet Your Councillors, located in each Ward, Saturday 4 August 10am-12pm

“Local government plays a large role in people’s lives, often without people even realising. Everything from council-owned roads, child care centres, libraries, and sports fields, to building and development, bushland management, and pet registrations are all operated by Cumberland Council,” Mayor Greg Cummings said.

“Local government is the level of government closest to communities that provide invaluable services every day of the year. Every day we strive to make Cumberland a great place to live, work and visit. This is a result of the partnership between Council and our residents which demonstrates the Power of Community, which is this year’s Local Government Week theme.

“Council’s Resource Recovery Team will be out educating the community on available waste and resource recovery services. You can learn about, reducing plastic bag use and how to get rid of problem waste such as old electrical equipment, mobile phones or batteries. With the major supermarkets stopping single use plastic bag, this is a great time to learn alternatives from Council staff.

“Council’s Aged and Disability Team will be hosting a free Great Big Brunch at Guildford Community Centre for all residents over 55 to learn about services available to them including meal delivery, exercise classes, social outings and events. The brunch will be followed by a free Zumba class to get the blood flowing.

“I encourage all residents to get involved with the activities and events on offer. Cumberland Council is proud to run a wide range of programs to support the unique needs of our community members. Council is more than just roads, rates and rubbish and Local Government Week is an opportunity to learn about Council’s many functions.”
