Mayor Greg Cummings will join with State Member for Granville Julia Finn MP, representatives from NSW Police, community leaders and the wider public for a march against domestic and family violence (DFV) on Friday 30 November at Granville Park from 4.30pm – 7pm.

The “Raising Strong Families! Say No to Domestic Violence” march is being held during the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence; an international campaign that runs from the 25 November and ends on International Human Rights Day on December 10.

Marchers will gather at Granville Park and make their way along Montrose Avenue, Merrylands Road and Woodville Road before returning to Granville Park. The evening will include a free barbeque, kid’s activities and family entertainment.

Mayor Greg Cummings welcomed the initiative, saying it was an opportunity to raise awareness of the issues surrounding domestic and family violence.

“Cumberland Council is committed to building a community where all our residents are safe, all of the time. There’s no room for domestic and family violence in Cumberland,” Mayor Greg Cummings said.

“Anyone can experience domestic and family violence. It happens across communities, ages, cultures and sexes. While it’s widespread, it is never acceptable.”

Council’s proactive response to DFV includes:

  • Grants for not-for profit organisations to prevent and respond to DFV
  • Training and support for community workers, community leaders and advocates
  • Programs in schools delivered in partnership with NSW Police and youth services
  • Improving collaboration amongst local services and community groups
  • Community awareness raising and education initiatives targeted CALD communities.

“Council’s Community Safety and Crime Prevention Plan makes it clear that strong partnerships between Council, police, community groups and service providers are essential to addressing anti-social behaviour,” Mayor Greg Cummings said.

“This is especially true for domestic and family violence, which is why Council is particularly supportive of those initiatives like the march which support cultural change.

“I invite everyone in the community to attend the march and take a stand against domestic and family violence.”
