At the Council meeting on 2 December 2020, Mayor Steve Christou moved a motion offering all local year six students a one-time twin pass to a swimming pool of their choice within the Cumberland City Council Local Government Area, or a one-hour free access pass to The Granville Centre synthetic court.

“This year has been a very difficult year for everyone, in particular for all school kids and their parents. The year has been on and off with remote learning in place and many events and sporting competitions cancelled,” said Mayor Steve Christou.

“From speaking with a number of residents in the community, I understand that some kids have been unable to reach their usual level of fitness activity, given the challenges the pandemic has brought in this year. That’s why Council is providing local kids and their families access to our Council owned facilities to help them get outdoors these school holidays.

“During my time as Mayor, I have been a strong supporter of nutrition and fitness for kids, with a number of key initiatives delivered such as the Healthy Kids project.

“As a Council we want to do all we can to encourage the health and wellbeing of our local kids, who are the future of this Council.”

Cumberland City Council continues to support the fitness and wellbeing of local youth. Our Healthy Kids program has reached over 4500 students since its inception in May 2019.
