The second annual Cumberland Local Heritage Awards and Cumberland Local Heritage Rebate Program are both now open and calling for entries.

Mayor Greg Cummings said that Cumberland’s heritage buildings includes streetscapes, gardens, parks, old mansions and community buildings, which all contribute to the character and charm of Cumberland.

“Cumberland has a very rich history, having been home first to the Darug nation for thousands of years and then to European settlers from the early days of colonisation. The heritage awards and rebate program is just one way Council is preserving and celebrating the history of our community,” Mayor Cummings said.

“The Heritage Awards are a great way to involve and educate the community about the local history and heritage of Cumberland. With so many categories to enter, community members of all ages can get involved with the competition while learning about the history of their home.

There are six award categories to enter:

  1. Best maintained heritage property
  2. Restoration and development of a heritage property
  3. Historical research of local person, group or aspect of Cumberland’s history  (open to high school students and community members)
  4. Colouring in competition (open for Kindergarten to Year 4)
  5. Writing competition including a short fiction story competition and a non-fiction essay competition (open to year five and six students)
  6. School poster competition (open for Kindergarten to Year 12 students)

“As part of Council’s commitment to maintaining the heritage of Cumberland the Local Heritage Rebate Program will also be running again this year which will offer grants to private owners of heritage buildings to help them keep the properties maintained.

“Heritage buildings are assets not only to the owners but to the whole community. Council recognises that there are additional costs to maintain a heritage building, which is why we are offering grants of up to $4,000 or 50 per cent of the maintenance cost (whichever is the lesser amount).”

Entries close at midnight on Friday 15 June 2018 and can be posted emailed to council@cumberland.nsw.gov.au or posted to:
