Cumberland Council has received the Best Council Award NSW for removing over 750m2 of graffiti at Harold Reid Park, Girraween as part of NSW Graffiti Removal Day 2018.

Cumberland was one of 65 local government areas that participated in the event, with 120 volunteers from Cumberland rolling up their sleeves and picking up a paint roller on Sunday 21 October 2018.

Mayor Greg Cummings welcomed the win saying the award reflected the priority Council put on removing graffiti.

“I would like to thank everyone who participated in Graffiti Removal Day in Cumberland and who contributed to this fantastic result,” Mayor Greg Cummings said.

“It was great to see community organisations like Holroyd Rotary, faith based organisations like the World Mission Society Church of God and Council staff working together.

“The theme of this year’s Graffiti Removal Day was ‘Love where you live’ and this perfectly encapsulated the spirit of the volunteers who participated.

Graffiti vandalism costs the NSW Government and residents more than $300 million each year.

“This is money which could be invested into roads, sporting facilities, schools and hospitals.

“That’s 300 million reasons for residents to take action and ensure that Graffiti Removal Day is bigger and better each year.

“However the challenge of graffiti vandalism won’t be solved by one day of action. I invite residents to report graffiti when they see it.

“Together we can eradicate graffiti and in the process love where we live.”
