Cumberland Council swim schools are one of the latest services to be registered as a provider of the NSW Government Active Kids program and Mayor Greg Cummings is encouraging parents to redeem their $100 vouchers at Learn to Swim classes.

The Active Kids program is a NSW Government initiative where parents, guardians and carers can apply for a voucher valued up to $100 per calendar year, per child, to help cover the costs of participating in sports and active recreation activities.

“Now is a great time for children to build up their swimming and water safety skills so that when the summer swimming season arrives they are confident in the water,” Mayor Cummings said.

“Cumberland Council has three pools open during the winter months - Auburn Ruth Everuss Aquatic Centre in Lidcombe, Granville Swim Centre and Guildford Swim Centre - with both the Auburn Ruth Everuss Aquatic Centre and Guildford Swim Centre offering indoor pools heated to a balmy 28 degrees.

“Cumberland Council is a proud partner of the Swim and Survive program; a comprehensive swimming and water safety initiative of Royal Lifesaving that seeks to increase the water safety skills of Australian children to prevent drowning and increase participation in safe aquatic activity.

“Since its inception over 30 years ago, more than 15 million Australian children have participated in the Swim and Survive program. Swim and Survive has made a significant contribution in many families’ lives by reducing the rate of drowning in children aged 5-14 years by over 75 per cent.

“With the Active Kids voucher now able to be redeemed towards Council swimming lessons, there has never been a better time to start. Council has opened enrolments for a July school holiday intensive program as well as Term 3 lessons.

“Cumberland Council swim centres are for the whole family so parents, carers and friends are also invited to join and can even sign up for adult lessons as well.”
