Cumberland Council has joined forces with local sporting organisations to host a free ‘Try Sports Day’ from 8.30am – 1pm on Thursday 19 April at Wyatt Park, Lidcombe.
The free event is a collaboration between Cumberland Council, Cricket NSW, Netball NSW, AFL NSW/ACT, PCYC Auburn and Dooley’s Catholic Club Lidcombe.
Mayor Greg Cummings said the event will give children aged 5 - 12 the opportunity to learn about a range of different sports available within the Cumberland area.
“The free Try Sports Day is a fun day out during the school holidays that won’t cost parents a thing,” Mayor Cummings said.
“It’s also a great opportunity for children to try a few sports, see what they enjoy and perhaps even consider taking it up.
“Joining a sporting club is not only a good way to stay fit and healthy, it’s also an opportunity to meet new people, make new friends and learn new things.
“The social aspect of sporting clubs is incredibly important, especially for young people. Being part of a team helps develop their confidence and interpersonal skills, while teaching them how to work with other people to achieve a common goal.
“We are fortunate in Cumberland to have so many great playing fields where such a variety of sports are played. Our sporting culture makes up a large part of the great community spirit we have in Cumberland.
“The Try Sports Day school holiday camp is a great way for parents to ignite children’s passion for sports and fitness and I encourage all parents to take advantage of this free event.
“We hope that everyone makes the most of the wonderful sports fields and open spaces we have in Cumberland during the school holidays.”
The Try Sports Day school holiday camp event is free but registrations are essential at www.cumberland.nsw.gov.au/events as morning tea is included for children.
