Cumberland City Council is joining forces with Plastic Free July to bring focus to reducing single-use plastics.

Winners of NSW Most Sustainable City in 2019, Cumberland City Council aim to keep their sustainable status and encourage residents to continue working towards a cleaner, greener city.

Mayor of Cumberland City Council Steve Christou says action to reduce single-use plastic starts with simple daily habits

“It starts in our homes, schools, workplaces and communities. We need to have more conversations about how to reduce single-use plastics, and work towards a better future for the next generation from today.”

“Reducing landfill and protecting the environment are just some of the outcomes of a joint response to combating the impact plastics have had on our community,” Mayor Steve Christou said.

In a 2016 audit focusing on Household Kerbside Waste, Recycling and Garden Organics Bin, Cumberland City’s overall non-recyclable plastics constituted 16% of bin contamination, including plastic bags, plastic film and composite plastics.

In response, Cumberland City Council have been hosts to a range of educational, plastic reduction initiatives, including ‘Boomerang Bag Making Workshops’ and ‘Kids Clothing and Toy Swap’.

This year Cumberland City Council have also been making reusable bags out of old banners in order to reduce waste and encourage the use of reusable bags.

The banner bags have been made by the Women’s Creative Hub, in support of Cumberland City Council.

Cumberland City Council is encouraging residents to sign up to the challenge and choose to avoid, refuse or replace as much single-use plastic this July.
