Cumberland Council is seeking community feedback on its Draft Asbestos Policy which will be placed on exhibition from Tuesday 27 March 2018 until Tuesday 24 April 2018.

Mayor Greg Cummings said that this Draft Policy highlights Council’s proactive approach to protecting the health and well-being of the community and using best practice to minimise exposure to asbestos.

“Australia has a large problem with asbestos and also one of the highest rates of asbestos related diseases in the world. We know how important it is to educate everyone about the dangers of asbestos, particularly in an area like Cumberland which makes up a large part of Sydney’s fibro belt,” Mayor Cummings said.

“Many homes within Cumberland built prior to 1987 may have used building materials which contain asbestos. We need the community to assist us identifying asbestos but the most important thing is to ensure people know how to do it safely.

“Council takes the health of its community, staff and contractors very seriously, which is why we are actively minimising exposure risk by providing a range of asbestos services including inspections, collections and information sessions.

“Our information sessions help people understand how to identify asbestos and remove small amounts under 10 square metres themselves. Once it is removed, Council will then pick up and dispose of the asbestos safely and responsibly.

“If you think you may have asbestos in your home but are not sure how to identify it, it is best to contact Council for assistance to self-identify or find out if you need an inspection by a specialist.”

The Draft Asbestos Policy and the Guideline to Asbestos Management can be viewed at haveyoursay.cumberland.nsw.gov.au or in person at Council Customer Service Centres and libraries. Submissions must be made by Tuesday 24 April 2018.
