Poppy the Possum is turning eight on Monday 6 August and is inviting everyone to join in the celebrations at the Bush School, Central Gardens, Merrylands.

Mayor Greg Cummings said over the past eight years Poppy the Possum has brought a lot of joy to children and adults alike through story-time sessions, community events, park and library visits, and at the Bush School.

“As the ambassador for our Paint Cumberland REaD early literacy program, Poppy the Possum plays a large role in promoting a positive relationship with education for children,” Mayor Greg Cummings said.

“By making learning and reading fun we hope to inspire the next generation of Cumberland residents to be actively involved in education. Poppy the Possum is a frequent guest at our Bush School where she helps young children learn in a creative and fun nature environment.

“We know that early literacy programs are beneficial for young children to help them prepare for reading and writing that lies ahead in primary school. Poppy the Possum helps to spark their imagination, nurture curiosity and hopefully begin a life-long journey of reading, learning and writing.

“To celebrate Poppy’s eighth birthday, Council is inviting residents to wear red to the Bush School in Central Gardens, Merrylands, for a morning of stories and songs to celebrate.”
