Cumberland Council is inviting the community to explore the new upgrades in Guildford at a free family friendly event: The Back to Guildford Festival on Saturday 25 May.
Council has made upgrades to public spaces in Guildford to help improve the perception of safety for women and girls as part of Transport for NSW's Safer Cities: Her Way Program.
The festival includes a packed entertainment program with a lineup of live music, roving performers, dancers, children’s activities, craft activities and a range of eateries, food and market vendors.
Cumberland Mayor Lisa Lake said Council is committed to making public spaces feel safer and more inclusive for residents and visitors to Cumberland.
“I am looking forward to seeing the completed works in Guildford and exploring the laneway’s new look and feel. It’s a good opportunity to bring the family along to the festival, enjoy the live entertainment and activities and spend time in our public spaces,” said Mayor Lake.
“We know that women sometimes experience public spaces differently to men so it’s really important that all of our residents feel safe and secure as they move around, enter or leave Cumberland.”
The works include a vibrant public art mural, as well as an upgraded laneway design, featuring new street furniture with tables and benches, installation of smart technology, lighting, CCTV cameras and convenient mobile phone charging stations.
NSW Minister for Transport Jo Haylen said it’s been incredible to partner with Cumberland City Council through the Safer Cities: Her Way program.
“Through our $30 million Safer Cities program we aim to create a more inclusive, enjoyable, and welcoming journey for our community when walking and cycling through our parks, streets, centres and around our transport hubs,” Ms Haylen said.
“The new Guildford Laneway upgrades have been informed by a series of engagement sessions with local women and girls and it’s amazing to see Council unveil the upgrades to enable everyone in the community feel safer as they move through the area.”
The Back to Guildford Festival will be held on Saturday 25 May along Guildford Road, between Railway Terrace and Bolton Street from 3pm to 9pm.
