Cumberland Council will be creating an Open Space and Recreation Strategy to make improvements to its open spaces and recreational facilities such as parks, sports fields, gardens, picnic areas, playgrounds and more.

The strategy will be a 10 year framework that activates Cumberland’s outdoor destinations and recreation, while exploring new and exciting opportunities.

Council is asking for feedback from residents and open space users to build an understanding of how these spaces are currently used and managed, whether the current services and spaces meet the community’s needs, and what their vision for the future is.

The strategy will focus on maximising the use of Cumberland’s open spaces in a way that delivers places and services where all members of the community can come together.

“Diverse open spaces with quality facilities and services are a way of bringing communities and local people together in a sustainable and healthy way,” Mayor Greg Cummings said.

“This 10 year strategy aims to be a framework to deliver the open spaces that the people of Cumberland want.

“To do this we need feedback from everyone so we can understand what people are currently using these spaces for and the needs they would like to be served in the future.

“This will allow Council to identify shortcomings, build on what’s working, and prepare for new opportunities and further improvements.”

Residents can have their say on Cumberland’s open spaces by:

  • Completing the online survey at cumberland.nsw.gov.au/have-your-say closing 23 February 2018.
  • Chat to us at the Australia Day celebrations at Holroyd Gardens, Pitt Street Merrylands, on Friday 26 January 2018 and the Little A’s Gala Day at Holroyd Sportsground on Saturday 3 February 2018.

It is expected that the final Draft Open Space and Recreation Strategy will be considered by Council in mid-2018 at which point it will be put on public exhibition for further comment.
