A new pedestrian crossing will be installed for Guildford Public School. The crossing will go on Military Road, near the corner of Trenton Road adjacent to the school.

“We want to improve safety for families, particularly for little ones in Cumberland,” Mayor Steve Christou said.

“Military Road can be extremely busy and parents need to be able to drop their kids off and know they can make their way safely into school if they need to cross the street.

“The purpose of this project is to ensure children who cross from the other side of the railway cross safely.”

Following active representation from year six students at Guildford Public School, Council undertook a traffic analysis and community consultation before approving the final pedestrian crossing plans in September 2019.

“Students have been terrific advocates for this crossing, and I’m glad that Council is in a position to make this happen,” said Mayor Christou.

Mayor Christou said motorists should always give way to pedestrians crossing the road if they are in danger of hitting someone, even if there is no marked pedestrian crossing.

“Please slow down on roads where there is likely to be pedestrians like school zones, shopping centres and restaurants,” said Mayor Christou.

“Seniors or pedestrians with a disability may take a longer time to cross the road, so please be patient if you’re driving and don’t assume someone crossing the road has seen you.

“If you’re a pedestrian, please look for cars coming from all possible directions, before crossing and look for bicycles and motorcycles as well as cars.”

The crossing will be used by approximately 400 students.
