A new multi-use community sports pavilion in Granville Park is a step closer with a Council report finding the construction of a new stadium financially viable and Council allocating $8m from the Woodville Reserve to see the project through.

Council passed a motion at the Council Meeting of 18 April that will see the dilapidated and out-dated structure along Montrose Avenue replaced with a new venue complete with function facilities.

A Plan of Management (POM) and Landscape Masterplan for Granville Park will also be developed to ensure the pavilion is consistent with Council’s vision for Granville Park to be an outstanding sports and recreational area for all of Cumberland.

Cumberland Council Mayor Greg Cummings welcomed the decision saying the new stadium was long overdue.

“This decision is a win for both Granville and Greater Western Sydney, and an investment in the health and well-being of the local community,” Mayor Cummings said.

“The $8m price tag will deliver a quality new facility that will be used and loved by sports lovers from across our area.”

The decision was welcomed by the Parramatta Two Blues Rugby Club who have relocated from Granville Park to Lidcombe Oval for the 2018 playing season.

Lidcombe Oval has recently been upgraded to one of Cumberland’s premium sporting venues with minor renovations to the main grandstand, amenities and canteen and improvements to the playing surface.

General Manager of the Two Blues Craig Morgan said if the recently revamped Lidcombe Oval was anything to go by, the Club was in for something special with a new stadium at Granville Park.

“Lidcombe Oval looks fantastic, the renovations are great and it’s a really good field to play on. However the true home of the Two Blues is Granville Park,” Mr Morgan said.

“A new stadium will not only be good for the Two Blues but for all of Western Sydney. As a club we have pride in the local area and it’s good we’re finally getting facilities to match.”
