Cumberland Council is supporting Conservation Volunteers Australia in a new project,  ‘re-wilding’ Prospect Creek.

The aim is to help regenerate a crucial artery of Cumberland Plain Woodland, which was  listed as an Endangered Ecological Community under the Threatened Species Conservation Act 1995 in June 1997.

Prospect Creek makes up Cumberland’s south west border and has been severely impacted by its location in a heavily residential and industrial area, hosting a population of over 190,000 people.

At the launch event on Monday 20 November, Mayor Greg Cummings called on Cumberland residents to lend any support they could.

“Prospect Creek is one of those neglected natural environments which are becoming more and more common in the dense suburbs of Sydney like Cumberland,” Mayor Cummings said.

“Prospect Creek is especially threatened because it’s smack bang in the heart of Cumberland’s industrial centre, meaning there are all types of urban pressures resulting in some disappointing effects on the waterway.

“In many places vegetation has been cleared all the way to the waterbank, meaning pollution caused by industrial runoff, rubbish dumping, weed invasion and other by products of modern life in the city is destroying the channel.

“It’s time to do something about it. Our waterways are so important to our environment and economy. They reduce floods, produce clean water and are home to important wildlife and plants, but it’s clear in this case that the balance is being lost.

“Cumberland Council is completely behind this initiative and I want to encourage anyone who can to lend a hand in ‘re-wilding’ Prospect Creek to get involved.
