Cumberland Council will give away 100 street name signs to the first 100 complete entries that nominate a street and answer in 25 words or less why that street is special to you.

The giveaway will run from Monday 7 May to Monday 4 June 2018 and coincides with the installation of approximately 5000 new street signs across Cumberland over the next 12 months.

The installation process will be done in three stages, starting in the former Woodville Ward on Monday 7 May before progressing to the former Auburn and Holroyd Council Areas.

Mayor Greg Cummings invited residents to enter the competition and share with all of Cumberland what they love about life in their street.

“A street sign is more than a piece of aluminium on a pole. A street sign is a marker of home,” Mayor Cummings said.

“A street sign tells you that you’ve returned safely after a long trip. It’s a daily reminder of your own place in this world.

“Street signs can be powerful triggers for memories and take us back to other times in our lives. They really are the stuff of nostalgia.

“Mindful of this, Council is making available 100 old street names signs. These won’t be recycled but will have pride of place in the pool rooms, backyards, offices and walls of 100 lucky entrants.

“We want to hear your stories and share them with all of Cumberland. We want you to tell us what you love about life in your street.

“We are also inviting residents to take photos of themselves on their street and post them to social media using the hashtag #claimaname and #cumberlandcouncil.”

To go in the running to win a street name sign visit haveyoursay.cumberland.nsw.gov.au and complete an entry by Monday 4 June.
