Cumberland Council is donating $25,000 to the Big Dry Drought Appeal to support drought-affected farmers.  A Mayoral Minute was unanimously carried at the 15 August Council meeting, which sees Cumberland match the contribution pledged by City of Parramatta and commit to lobbying State and Federal Governments to provide further financial support to rural farming communities.

Mayor Greg Cummings said the donation was timely but more action was needed.

“No local council is an island. Cumberland may be more residential than rural, but we are dependent on our farmers inland for much of the fresh food we enjoy daily,” Mayor Greg Cummings said.

“This donation is recognition of our interdependence with rural farming communities. It supports those who have given us so much through their work in primary industries.

“During times of natural disaster Australians have a long history of digging deep and helping out those doing it tough.

“Compassion shouldn’t stop at council borders. The Cumberland community is big hearted enough to support those struggling outside of our LGA.

“With a dry spring forecasted, it’s important that this issue does not fall off the political agenda as the media cycle moves on.

“Council is committed to using our resources to lobby state and federal governments to make sure that rural farming communities are given the support they both need and deserve.

“I encourage all residents to do their bit and donate to the Big Dry Drought Appeal.”
