To acknowledge Reconciliation Week 2020, Cumberland City Council will be hosting a range of activities for residents.

Council will be running two online cultural awareness training sessions and will finish with a virtual movie screening of ‘In My Blood It Runs’, followed by a Q&A with the filmmaker, as part of Reconciliation Week 2020.

National Reconciliation Week runs from 27 May to 3 June every year. These dates commemorate two significant historic milestones; the successful 1967 referendum, and the High Court Mabo decision.

Mayor of Cumberland City Council, Steve Christou, says this year’s theme ‘In This Together’ is a fitting reflection of the community’s sentiments with the impacts of COVID-19.

“In the spirit of this year’s theme ‘In this Together’, Council continues its commitment to the delivery of the Reconciliation Action Plan by bringing you more innovative ways of celebrating Aboriginal and Indigenous stories and culture,” Mayor Christou said.

“Council prides itself in having strong local ties to our Indigenous community, through shared histories, cultures and synonymous areas like Prospect Hill.

“Prospect Hill is a renowned Aboriginal Heritage Site in our Local Government Area. It’s most notably recognised for being the place where the first act of reconciliation took place on 3 May 1805.”

This year, Reconciliation Australia marks twenty years of shaping Australia’s journey towards a more equitable and inclusive society.
