Throughout the month of November, Council is urging homeowners, renovators and tradies to learn more about the dangers of Asbestos through a free online information session and 45-minute house inspections.

One in three homes in Australia contain asbestos, which can be found in multiple places in homes including walls, bathrooms, ceilings, floors, laundries, kitchens, roofs, fences and garages.

Asbestos is a dangerous mineral that was added to building materials. The mineral is not safe and poses a major health risk if the tiny fibres are inhaled.

Houses in Western Sydney are believed to be the highest at risk due to the ‘fibro belt’. This term reflects suburbs where houses were built using highly concentrated asbestos-containing products, specifically before 1990.

Cumberland City Mayor Lisa Lake said that Council is aware of the dangers of asbestos and places great importance on informing residents about the health risks.

“Council understands the health risks associated with exposure to asbestos so If you’re concerned there may be asbestos in your home but you’re not sure how to identify it, I encourage you to sign up to our online information session or contact Council to book a free house inspection,” she said.

More than 4,000 deaths in Australia are related to asbestos each year with the nation having one of the highest incidences of mesothelioma in the world.

Mayor Lake said providing residents with information on the management, removal and disposal of asbestos has become a priority for Council.

“Council has been running awareness campaigns and collection programs since 2013. Through education and awareness, we can help reduce this risk of exposure and help our residents ‘Be Asbestos Ready’, especially when planning renovations.”

Council is also offering free asbestos collection for residents. To find out more information on Asbestos visit: https://www.cumberland.nsw.gov.au/asbestos-awareness-month
