Cumberland City Council has hosted Australian Citizenship Ceremonies at the Granville Centre today, with 140 new Australian citizens being sworn in.

The ceremonies coincide with Australian Citizenship Day and presents an opportunity for all Australian citizens, whether by birth or by choice, to reflect on the meaning and importance of their citizenship.

“Australia is one of the most culturally diverse nations in the world welcoming over five million new citizens since 1949,” said Mayor Steve Christou.

“I am proud that Cumberland City reflects this sentiment with our community being one of the most multicultural in the region. With residents from over 150 different countries, we embrace diversity as our strength and citizenship ceremonies like these give us a chance to celebrate it. Our Australian citizenship is the common bond which unites us all.

“We’re delighted that we can use the newly opened Granville Centre as a space to welcome new citizens who are taking the pledge and are making a public commitment to Australia and accepting the responsibilities and privileges of being Australian.

“I understand that adjusting to life in Australia can be a process however many of you have already contributed a great deal to our workforce, neighbourhoods and communities.

“I encourage you get out there and be involved in projects and initiatives that promote the values that guide us all as Australian citizens.”

Countries of conferees include India, Afghanistan, China, Iran, Lebanon, Pakistan, Philippines, Turkey, Nepal, Cambodia, South Korea, Italy, Kuwait, Malaysia, Ghana, Sri Lanka, Peru, Vietnam, New Zealand, Syria, Chile, Iraq, Egypt, Malta, Argentina, Colombia, UK, Fiji and Indonesia. Council is taking all the necessary precautions during COVID-19 to conduct ceremonies in the safest way and looks forward to embracing and welcoming our new citizens and residents.
