Cumberland Welcomes New Deputy Mayor

Cumberland City Council is pleased to announce the election of Councillor Nadima Kafrouni-Saba as the new Deputy Mayor, following an extraordinary Meeting of Council on Thursday 16 October.

Cumberland City Council is pleased to announce the election of Councillor Nadima Kafrouni-Saba as the new Deputy Mayor, following an extraordinary Meeting of Council on Thursday 16 October.

Deputy Mayor Kafrouni-Saba who has served as a Cumberland Councillor since September 2024 will support Mayor Ola Hamed, who began her two-year term as Mayor in October 2024.

Commenting on the appointment, Deputy Mayor Kafrouni-Saba said she was honoured for the opportunity to serve the Cumberland community as Deputy Mayor over the next year.

“I am deeply honoured to serve as your Deputy Mayor, alongside Madam Mayor Ola Hamed. I will bring my passion, my dedication, and my heart to this role every single day.” Deputy Mayor Kafrouni-Saba said.

“Cumberland is one of the most diverse and dynamic regions in NSW, a place where cultures meet, families grow, businesses thrive and dreams take shape, bringing with it both challenges and opportunities.”

“My commitment is to be a bridge builder, someone who listens deeply, seeks common ground, and always acts in the best interest of our residents.”

Cumberland Mayor Ola Hamed Congratulated Deputy Mayor Kafrouni-Saba on her appointment and sent out a message to the women and girls aspiring to be leaders.

“I would like to congratulate Councillor Nadima Kafrouni-Saba on her election as Deputy Mayor for the next 12 months. I look forward to working closely with you as we continue to serve our community with integrity and purpose.” said Mayor Hamed.

“With two women leading this Council, I believe we are sending a powerful message to women and to young girls across our community, that leadership has many faces, and that women have an important and rightful place in every room where decisions are made.”

Deputy Mayor Kafrouni-Saba also added she was honoured by the confidence her fellow Councillors had placed in her and expressed her appreciation to outgoing Deputy Mayor Councillor Michael Zaiter.

“Thank you for believing in me and for giving me this opportunity to serve as your Deputy Mayor. It is truly an honour to work alongside each and every one of you.” she said.

“I would also like to acknowledge Councillor Michael Zaiter for his dedicated service as Deputy Mayor. Your contributions have been greatly valued, and I look forward to continuing to learn from you and work alongside you.”

Councillors commended the newly elected Deputy Mayor and highlighted her efforts as a Councillor who is steadfast in community-focused decision-making.

Deputy Mayor Kafrouni-Saba assured the community that she is committed to continue working with Council and the community to invest in infrastructure and services that strengthen the area, create more spaces where residents can connect and be engaged, support local businesses, and encourage community participation in decision making to reach realistic solutions.
