Children under 5 from the Cumberland area can receive a free introductory swim lesson this week at the Auburn Ruth Everuss Aquatic Centre as part of Learn2Swim Week. The initiative, supported by Sport Australia Hall of Fame member Laurie Lawrence, hopes to get local kids in the pool to increase water confidence and raise awareness about childhood drownings, a problem in the Cumberland area.

Namesake of the Auburn Aquatic Centre and former Australian Olympian, Ruth Everuss, encouraged local parents to ‘make the most of the opportunity.’

“Childhood drownings have a devastating impact on families and whole communities” said Ruth.

“It’s heartbreaking whenever I hear stories of this happening and unfortunately they aren’t becoming less frequent.

“It’s a shame because swimming lessons early in life are a simple, easy way to protect your children from this risk.

“Warmer weather is just around the corner so it’s the perfect time to get down to the pool.”

“If you or someone you know has a littley who has not yet had swimming lessons, please encourage them to visit the Learn2Swim Week website and register for a lesson.

“If you head down for a lesson don’t forget to spread the word and let all your friends know. We need a united community effort to raise awareness around Cumberland and start to save lives together.”

The offer ends 1 October so visit www.learn2swimweek.com and in just a few clicks you can sign up for a free lesson at Auburn Ruth Everuss Aquatic Centre. Alternatively, call 1300 482 575.
