Cumberland Council will be hosting an evening of drums, music, singers and feasting as part of Nowruz celebrations on Saturday 18 March.
For the first time, Council will be holding a community event to celebrate Nowruz, meaning ‘New Day’ marking the beginning of spring and renewal.
Mayor Lisa Lake said she was looking forward to embracing this cultural event with the community.
“Nowruz is a significant time of year for many people in our community. It promotes peace, harmony and togetherness among friends and family. It also focuses on cultural diversity and friendship among peoples and different communities,” she said.
The event will mark cultural traditions with a haft-sin table arrangement that includes seven food items known as the seven ‘S’ foods, each symbolising renewal and springtime.
The night will feature a line-up of live entertainment and performances from dancers, singers and Turkish drummers as well as a range of food vendors.
There will also be a range of stall holders and art and cultural activities with handmade jewellery, sewing, traditional Afghan beading, temporary henna tattoos and face painting.
Nowruz, traditionally celebrated on the astronomical vernal equinox, has been celebrated for more than 3,000 years by cultures around the world with significance to countries in the Middle East, parts of Asia and Southeast Europe.
Cumberland Council’s Nowruz community event will be held at the Granville Centre on Saturday 18 March from 5.30pm.
