Cumberland City Council is urging residents to be extra cautious when making any changes to their home, due to an increased number of incidents of asbestos exposure, reported by SafeWork NSW.

Mayor of Cumberland City Council Steve Christou says asbestos must be dealt with safely for the health and safety of residents.

“The recent increase in the number of homeowners doing renovations as a result of COVID-19 lockdown measures, means there is a greater risk of asbestos exposure and contamination,” he said.

“Cumberland City is an identified area where homes have been built before 1990 and may contain asbestos. If asbestos is found as part of a renovation, it is recommended that a licensed asbestos contractor is used to safely remove and dispose of asbestos.”

SafeWork NSW have indicated high pressure water use on roofs as one of the major causes of asbestos exposure in recent months.

“To prevent the exposure of asbestos within the Cumberland Community, residents need to ensure asbestos is safely removed and disposed correctly, particularly during home clean ups and renovations,” Mayor Steve Christou said.

Cumberland City Council runs a range of information sessions and workshops around asbestos awareness, which kicks off during Asbestos Awareness month in November.
