Today is International Day of People with Disability and Cumberland Council is celebrating the global day with a community event at Merrylands Park.
“Today is all about celebrating their achievements and contributions, and promoting awareness, acceptance and understanding of people with disability,” Mayor Steve Christou said.
“We want to create more liveable places and an inclusive community, which address the rights and contributions of people with disability.
“We encourage you to ensure that people with a disability are acknowledged and valued in Cumberland.”
This year’s theme is ‘Promoting the participation of persons with disabilities and their leadership'.
A number of local residents with disability are joining Council and the Human Sound Project at Merrylands Park Function Hall to commemorate the event through unique song and music.
The motto, ‘The Future is Accessible’ means looking towards a future where no barriers exist.
“We will create a future that demands access for everyone,” he said.
“This could mean providing ramp access instead of stairs, or a job without discrimination. Working towards an accessible future is everyone’s responsibility.
“We’re pleased we can partner with community groups and residents who might experience barriers and to let them know, we will work together to overcome them.”
In 2016, there were 12 502 people living with a disability in the Cumberland region.
