More than 1,200 trees will be planted across the Cumberland City local government area as part of the Cooler Corridor and Canopy for the Community projects.

The initiative will see the planting and maintenance of trees in areas such as riparian corridors, parks and reserves in areas including Duck River, Prospect Creek and Pemulwuy.

Cumberland City Council General Manager Peter Fitzgerald said the project aligns with Council’s direction in valuing green spaces and landscape and future planning.

“With the increase in heat across Western Sydney, we recognise the importance of creating a cooler and healthier environment for our residents.

The Cooler Corridor and Canopy for the Community projects will increase the existing canopy and provide additional shade and comfort in parks, bushland and community spaces”.

The trees planted will include a variety of native trees, many of which are from the Cumberland Plain Woodland species and will be planted over several months.

The project is being funded by Council, and the NSW Government through the 5 Million Trees grant program and will commence in December 2021.
