Youth Week began as a NSW Government initiative in 1989, and has since grown to be a celebration of young people across the country.

The theme for 2020 is, ‘Speak up. Be involved. Get connected. Have fun.’

“In Cumberland, young people make up around 20 percent of the city’s population and I always feel proud to see our young residents getting involved in their local community,” said Mayor Steve Christou.

“Youth Week is an opportunity for young people to express their ideas, be empowered to use their voices, showcase their talents and celebrate their contribution to the community.

“In a multicultural community like Cumberland, it’s important to value our local youth to secure the long-term future of the community and make a difference.

“Council runs a number of year-round youth activities and events that young residents can get involved in. This year, our Youth Week will be virtual as part of our initiative to redirect events online during COVID-19.

“The essence of a successful community is its youth, so it is important that we acknowledge them and invite them to be active participants in our arts and affairs.

“Youth Week is a great opportunity to do this, so I encourage our young people to get involved in the community and enjoy the fun events planned to celebrate."

National Youth Week is jointly supported by Cumberland City Council through the support of our youth network, Youth 4 Youth (Y4Y).
