Cumberland Council has announced a study and audit of all open spaces in the local area to create a 10 year strategy for recreation in Cumberland. The study will survey current open space and recreation across Cumberland, investigate demand and identify gaps in service.

The strategy will focus on maximising the use of Cumberland’s open spaces in a way that delivers places and services where all members of the community can come together.

Cumberland Council Administrator Viv May stressed the importance of the study:

“Cumberland is one of the largest Council areas in Sydney with plenty of open space and a young population,” explained Mr May.

“Many of the facilities and services at ovals and reserves are not of an acceptable standard and they are in urgent need of major upgrades.

“The study will help us understand exactly what open spaces we have at our disposal, what the Community wants from these spaces and what Council will need to cater for in the future as Cumberland grows and evolves.

“Not only will we be looking at how our current open spaces are managed but importantly, explore opportunities for new recreational destinations.

“Once this is realised, the next step will be creating a strategy that will act as a framework over the next 10 years to find improvements to activate outdoor destinations and recreation across Cumberland.

“Good open spaces are a way of bringing communities and local people together in a sustainable and healthy way.

“It’s important that all residents have open spaces where they can relax, exercise or simply enjoy some fresh air. The goal of this strategy is to make these places easily accessible, user friendly with facilities more in keeping with modern expectations.”

Council will be appointing a group of ten residents to advise on the preparation of the study which will take into account previous plans and strategies but essentially be based on detailed research, consultation and clear evidence.
