16 December 2016 – Media Release

A report going to Cumberland Council on Wednesday 21 December will propose a number of exciting major projects, most notably a $20 million Granville Multi Purpose Community Centre, Library and Regional Gallery integrated with the existing pool, park and outdoor recreation facilities at the Granville Memorial Park site.

The project will be immediately delivered thanks to $15 million provided by the NSW Government as part of the Stronger Communities Fund to kickstart the improvement of local community infrastructure and services in the new Cumberland Council area. $10 million will go straight to the Granville project with an additional $10 million being provided by Council from internal executive salary savings.

$4 million will go towards a diverse spread of improvements including an expansion of Auburn Library, 30 mobile CCTV units in the former Holroyd area, a replacement bridge in Westmead and upgrades to Auburn Botanic Gardens and Central Gardens in Merrylands. The remaining $1 million is funding a community grants program.

“Cumberland Council is adding value that didn’t exist before the merger to deliver well overdue infrastructure that could never have been funded” Administrator Viv May said.

“The $15 million provided by the State Government as well as the $10 million saved by Council as a result of the merger has resulted in immediate benefits to the community and this early success is only the beginning. There will be more exciting announcements in early 2017.

“The program covers a diverse spread of areas which need to be confronted now. These funds will allow us to deliver on what is a once in a lifetime opportunity and this new centre will provide social, cultural facilities and services that meet the diverse needs of a growing community and a changing demographic.

“All research and consultation showed that these projects are sorely needed and will have a real long term impact on Cumberland’s residents.

“This program of infrastructure enhancement is further evidence that the merger is improving outcomes for the people of Cumberland.”
